Book Review: Paper Towns by John Green

This is my favourite John Green book that I have read so far. The others I have read are 'The Fault in Our Stars' and 'Looking For Alaska'. I really enjoyed the story and read it fairly quickly because I was dying to know what happened, even though it was the John Green book that appealed to me the least for some strange reason.

Quentin is in his senior year of high school getting ready to graduate. He has a decent group of friends who he is pretty close to yet still has a massive crush on Margo Roth Spiegelman. He practically idolises her and does everything he can to find her when she goes missing one day.

One night Margo appears at Quentin's window and they have a night full of adventures, mostly playing pranks on people in their school. The next morning Quentin shows up at school and wonders if things will now be different between him and Margo - but she is not there. He searches everywhere for clues to find out what happened to her and even goes on a massive road trip with his friends in their search for Margo.

I loved the first section of the book which was about Quentin's adventurous night out with Margo. Although it was a bit unrealistic I chose to forget that and just enjoy what was happening. The next section was when Margo had disappeared and Quentin was trying to put all the clues together. This was good, but at the time I was considering the possibility that Margo had killed herself and couldn't deal with reading yet another John Green book about someone dying. I'm not going to tell you what happened to her, just remember that this is a John Green book and anything could happen. The last section about the road trip was so fun to read. It made me want to take a long road trip with a bunch of people. There were moments which really made me laugh just seeing the problems they have with being stuck in a car for a very long time and being able to relate to them.

My problem with this book was that I found Margo to be pretty selfish and it took Quentin way too long to see that. She was definitely an extremely interesting girl, and I wish I had that kind of confidence, but there were times I got slightly annoyed with her for being so selfish. I won't say anymore because I don't want to give any spoilers in case you haven't read it.

If you haven't read this book I suggest you do. I loved reading it and was pretty sad when it ended. It was fun reading a book from a guy's point of view for a change. I've realised I don't read that many books where a guy is the main character. Now it seems that I am because I've recently bought a few more that happen to have guys as the main characters. It's also one of those books that makes you think about your own life and how you treat people and react to different situations.

Go read it and let me know what you think. Or if you have already read it tell me what you thought about it. Leave a comment or tweet me at @WaffleDreamland

One Of My Favourite Films: Alice In Wonderland

Don't judge me...one of my favourite films is Alice in Wonderland. That's the old Disney cartoon version, not the newer creepy one they made. It's the film I watch when I'm not feeling well and don't really feel like doing anything. It cheers me up.

For anyone who doesn't know the story it's about a girl called Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a crazy land where animals talk and there is a wicked queen called the Queen of Hearts who likes to chops of people's heads. Alice discovers many interesting things in this strange land while searching for a talking white rabbit. She then has some trouble finding her way home and runs into the wicked queen.
Alice in Wonderland

I actually used to like this film when I was a kid but just didn't realise. I loved it because it was so colourful. I think there is only one brief moment when Alice is lost in the forest that there isn't much colour. The scene with all the singing flowers is so beautiful, and all that colour helps brighten my mood somehow.

The music in this film is amazing. Some of it is crazy enough to reflect the craziness of the place that Alice is in. It has songs that aren't perhaps the most well known Disney songs, but they still manage to get stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

The Mad Hatter is the character I can most relate to because he loves tea almost as much as I love tea. The scene with the Mad Hatter's tea party is one of my favourites because it is so crazy and because it has a lot of tea! It is my aim in life to one day have my own Mad Hatter's tea party. It will be an extremely colourful event with more tea than you could possibly imagine!

Although I don't really think I am like Alice in many ways, I often find myself thinking that my curiosity can get me into trouble. If Alice hadn't been so curious about the White Rabbit she wouldn't have fallen down the rabbit hole in the first place. I doubt that sort of thing would happen to me, I'm more curious about things when talking to other people. It's the questions I ask that could sometimes get me into trouble. I love getting to know new things about people and sometimes ask people too many questions. I just find other people's lives really interesting and love to know more.

I am definitely very childish at times and can't help liking kids films. They're so easy to watch and they're perfect when I don't feel very well. Alice in Wonderland is definitely one of my favourites because it makes me so happy and brings back nice childhood memories. Hopefully one day I'll be able to have that tea party :p

What's your favourite film?

Random Word: Villain

Today's random word is 'villain'.

I am one of those people who loves the villains in stories much more than any other characters. Maybe that says something about the type of guys I usually fall for... Sometimes I guess I want something more interesting than the normal 'good vs evil' thing and want to see what stories are like when the villains win.

My Top 3 Favourite Villains:

1. Sylar from Heroes

I used to LOVE watching Heroes and I have to say that I got a bit over excited whenever Sylar came on screen. He is my favourite villain of all time. I think he was the first villain I ever saw on tv who actually scared me. At that time I'd never seen anyone slice someone's head open using the power of their mind. I was terrified but also knew at that point that this Sylar guy was going to make the story so much more exciting. Maybe I also find him my favourite villain because he is so hot. I mean you have to admit this guy is insanely good looking. You can imagine my disappointment when I found out that Zachary Quinto, the guy who played him, is actually gay. But still this insanely creepy guy made an amazing tv show even more amazing. Now I have the urge to go watch Heroes...

2. Ben from Lost

No I didn't have a crush on this guy. But I remember finding him so creepy when he turned up in Lost. I couldn't tell if he was a good guy or a bad guy. To be honest I still find myself questioning that at times. But for all the times he did bad things I'm going to call him a villain. He messed with my mind so much, and there were moments while I was watching Lost that I was so scared waiting to see what he was going to do next. Michael Emerson the actor is a truly gifted actor who managed to make me fear a character and also have a soft spot for him. There were so many times I felt sorry for Ben and wanted things to go well for him.

3. Dexter from Dexter

I think it is a genius idea to have a villain play the main character in a tv show. Okay so he does face much worse villains but come on, this guy chops people up. I don't care how many people out there are worse than him or how he always finds away to justify why he kills people, he's still a killer. That gives me the right to call him a villain. I used to be scared of him and used to cover my eyes when he killed people. Now I guess I'm used to it. That's pretty scary! I love his sarcasm and how sometimes it's so obvious that he's a killer but most people around him just don't realise. No villain has made me laugh as much as Dexter. The actor Michael C Hall is another genius. I wouldn't say I have a crush on him exactly but there is something about his personality that I love and find so hilarious.

So there you go, that's my waffle on today's random word. Let me know what you think of these villains and which people you consider to be your favourite villains.

My Favourite YouTubers: SACCONEJOLYs

I watch the SACCONEJOLYs every single day, and this is by far my favourite YouTube channel. It is a daily vlog channel so each day there is a video around fifteen minutes long containing the daily activities of the Saccone Joly family.

Jonathan and Anna were married three years ago but started their daily vlogs a few years before that. They have a beautiful daughter Emilia who is almost two years old and a gorgeous five month old son Eduardo. I absolutely adore this family and I love seeing the children grow up.

I started watching these videos back in February, and Anna was still pregnant with Eduardo. It didn't take me long to fall in love with this family and eagerly wait for the birth of baby Eduardo. Since then I've seen Eduardo grow into a beautiful and happy boy - he is always smiling and is just so adorable. Back then they all lived in Ireland but a couple of months ago they moved to the UK near London. They have a beautiful home and show us around all the amazing places they go to.

They have also made friends with a lot of well known YouTubers in the area such as Zoe and Alfie. For those who don't actually know who they are their main channels are Zoella and PointlessBlog. Zoe once recommended the SACCONEJOLYs on her channel and they actually had a huge increase in subscribers. This really is a YouTube channel worth subscribing to. It does seem weird to spend my own time watching other people's lives, but just remember that it is only fifteen minutes a day and it's so lovely to be able follow a wonderful young family and see them grow and do new things. So go subscribe today if you haven't already and let me know what you think!
